Product Description Scott Pilgrim's life is so awesome. He's 23 years old, in a rock band, "between jobs," and dating a cute high school girl. Everything's fantastic until a seriously mind-blowing, dangerously fashionable, rollerblading delivery girl named Ramona Flowers starts cruising through his dreams and sailing by him at parties. But the path to Ms Flowers isn't covered in rose petals. Ramona's seven evil ex-boyfriends stand in the way between Scott and true happiness. Can Scott beat the bad guys and get the girl without turning his precious little life upside-down?

Something young adults of all types can enjoy September 1, 2010 "MrHaru" I will admit I wasn't a Scott Pilgrim fan from the start. I even hated the series; the thought that something tried to cash in on the "video game clique" with the way the movie was looking by its trailers and commercials, I thought SP was a piece of crap that didn't deserve to exist or even be made.
Then I played the game on Xbox Live, then tried to look deeper into it. I have my first volume now, and I have to say without a shadow of a doubt I am hooked. It's really not entirely about video games at all; the references are simply icing on the cake of what's already a great "nerdy" themed book series. Most of the characters are loveable and it helps with the art style behind simple, NEW (I've yet to see anybody copy this type of style/visual look), and keeping me hooked at every page. The story starts out slow but quickly gains steam once the first of the Evil Exes, Matthew Patel, appears. From there it's just a bucket of fun....or perhaps a book of fun. Either way, I just saw the movie yesterday and getting this book today was just the best kind of prize I could have.
I recommend this series to anybody who knows what it was like growing up and wants to explore their youth again.
Man, this was good. August 27, 2010 William I was absolutely hooked from the opening line of the book ("Scott Pilgrim is dating a high schooler!") and happily rode along until the final page. This could have been a very different (albeit, more boring) book and I still would have been a satisfied reader. O'Malley does such an excellent job covering the nuances of a shoulder shrug or widened eyes that I was interested in the characters and eager to know more about them. This could have been just the story of a low ambitioned twenty-something drifting through life, who starts a simple, comfortable relationship with one girl only to fall head over heels for his (much more challenging) dream girl and how that all plays out and I would have read this without any complaints. Instead, as most folks reading this will already know, the book consists of this story as well as over the top action as Scott has to fight and defeat the seven evil ex-boyfriends of his dream girl before she can truly be his (he only fights one in this volume). Realistic dating-two-girls-at-once-can't-figure-out-how-to-let-the-nice-girl-down-easy angst followed by colossal combat scenes staged musical style. It's a peanut butter and chocolate combination.
Still, I wouldn't recommend this to everyone. If you haven't previously dipped your toe into comic books, video game culture, or shamelessly bombastic martial arts movies then this book runs the very real risk of leaving you cold. If the reader is not in on the joke then a large portion of the humor may not hit home.
In addition to the comic book/video game/martial arts movie crowd, I'd also recommend this to anyone who can relate to being aimless in your twenties, "between jobs," going nowhere in a terrible rock band. This world is portrayed so well (and the transition between this and the crazy fighty fight is as seamless as it can possibly be) that it can bring a smile of recognition--even to someone nearly twenty years removed from such a life--that encourages a reader to follow along when the plot moves from familiar to 64 mid-air hits in one combo awesomeness. Preaching, again, perhaps, to the choir, as long as the choir is willing to keep an open mind.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and have purchased the other five in the series and will be reading them in short order. If you enjoy comic books (and can move beyond straightforward superhero stories), martial arts movies, video games, indie films, or self-mocking stories of modern bohemia and are at least moderately intrigued with what the result would be if all of these things were tossed in a blender and thoroughly mixed then I would recommend picking up this book.
Rating: Awesome! August 25, 2010 Brittany Dudas (Bridgeport, Pennsylvania) I bought this book after seeing the movie trailer (I know I bought this based on seeing a movie trailer). This is one of the best books I have ever read! It starts off slow, but soon gets going.
Scott is 23, no job, lives in a one room apartment, and plays video games. He starts dreaming of a girl and then meets her for real. That's when the story gets going.
You should know something about video games and how they work to get this story. I have since bought the next five books, and they are all great too!
Scott Pilgrim is awesome! August 17, 2010 dbw08a This book has so many nerdy references its almost hard to keep up with. Funny, good artwork and just flat-out ridiculous and epic fighting makes Scott Pilgrim a must have for nerds and manga fans everywhere. The only thing I don't like about this series is Wallace... Scott Pilgrim's gay roommate... I don't dig it.
Simple Fun with an Alright Cast August 10, 2010 GPeralta (CA, USA) 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
Don't start this series expecting one of the greatest works in graphic novel history.
The first of a six volume series, "Scott Pilgrim" starts off rather drab, introducing a plethora of characters in a slice of life manner. However, unlike your typical slice of life hit, characters here are rather hit or miss, with each of them showing a promising enough personality, but ultimately not getting enough screen (er, "panel") time to really make all that big of an impact this first volume around.
The story is simple enough, with the title character leading a dull, dull life until he begins to show interest in a delivery girl. From here onwards, one would expect the story to gradually begin to pick up, as Scott begins to further fall into some kind of realm of nonsense and videogame references. However, the story-telling here is rather rough, jumping between the mundane to the nonsensical in an erratic manner. The fact that the cast itself is neither here nor there doesn't help this standard story that much, either.
As a whole, I was somewhat disappointed with this first volume, but am willing to continue with the series, if only for its short length. Read it for a giggle or two, but don't expect anything spectacular from Scott Pilgrim or his precious little life.
