Product Description
New York Times best selling author William R. Forstchen now brings us a story which can be all too terrifyingly real...a story in which one man struggles to save his family and his small North Carolina town after America loses a war, in one second, a war that will send America back to the Dark Ages...A war based upon a weapon, an Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP). A weapon that may already be in the hands of our enemies. Months before publication, One Second After has already been cited on the floor of Congress as a book all Americans should read, a book already being discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a truly realistic look at a weapon and its awesome power to destroy the entire United States, literally within one second. It is a weapon that the Wall Street Journal warns could shatter America. In the tradition of On the Beach, Fail Safe and Testament, this book, set in a typical American town, is a dire warning of what might be our future...and our end.

Fantastic Story September 8, 2010 Craig W This book really got my wife and me thinking about what we need to do to prepare for any situation where our society collapses (due to any number of possible reasons). Good story with a good possibility of something like this happening. We even made the decision to not sell our 1966 Studebaker because of this book. We have loaned the book to several friends who all enjoyed it and purchased two more copies as gifts for friends. It also prompted me to buy (and am currently reading) James Weseley Rawles book "Patriots".
I am not a "survivalist", member of a militia, etc. and I recommend this book to everyone.
One Second After September 7, 2010 bc Excellent book. It could really happen. The detail of possible events are realistic.
Made a grown man cry September 4, 2010 Mikeylikes By far my favorite novel in the genre so far. The character development is some of the best I have ever read. Some movies through the years have brought a tear to my eye but this is the first book to easily do so. The overall theme is perfectly time-centric to todays world. One Second After also avoids the pitfalls of forcing unnecessary science fiction, high tech mumbo jumbo, or super spy like attributes onto any of the characters like many other disaster related books and movies do.
For those already of a preparedness/survival mindset this is a good novel to share with your friends and family who may be oblivious to just how fragile today's society could potentially be.
This book reveals how fragile and vulnerable we are! September 3, 2010 Phil Guice (Atlanta, GA USA) This book is a real eye opener! Really made me look at preparedness in a whole new light. Buy it!
Middle of the road... August 30, 2010 JEA (Oregon) Finally got around to reading this and while doing so I finally figured out why I had similar feelings towards "World Made by Hand" by Kunstler. The over-riding lesson far outweighs the story and thus leads to a less than compelling outcome. Overall, I liked this book more than Kunstler's, but they are both similar in feel. Both have an unlikely lead character, though I think the super-hero, history professor in One Second After was a little over the top.
I think one of the most annoying things in this book was how fast the everyone could smoke cigarettes. The lead character lights one up, talks for about 30 seconds to a minute, finishes it and then lights up another. That's fast smoking friends. That happens over and over again. I'm not quite sure why cigarettes were such a focus in the book. They played about as much of a lead role as Kunstler's over-described meals in "World Made by Hand".
I'm not sorry I read this book, as it was quick and easy to get through and it had it's moments, but I won't be reading it again any time soon.
