Product Description
He was just a freckle-faced, redheaded kid with green eyes and a strangely campelling stare when Mother Mastiff first saw him at the auctioneer's block. One hundred credits and he was hers. For years the old woman was his only family. She loved him, fed him, taught him everything she knew--even let him keep the deadly flying snake he called Pip. Then Mother Mastiff mysteriously disappeared and Flinx took Pip to tail her kidnappers. Across the forests and swamps of the winged world called Moth, their only weapons were Pip's venom ... and Flinx's unusual Talents.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Old School SciFi   July 7, 2010
W. Bentrim (Bucks County, PA)
This is the first of the Pip and Flinx stories. Pip is an Alaspinian mini-dragon. Flinx is an orphan with interesting talents. Flinx is the unwitting target of both law enforcement and an underground outlaw group. Avoiding entrapment by either group is the gist of the story.

I have enjoyed the Pip and Flinx stories over the years and have carefully kept them for my grandson. I was delighted to find this first volume to set the scene for the later books.

Flinx and Pip have a relationship that is beyond the boy and his pet type. They are interdependent, more so than Flinx realizes. The story is the beginning of a coming of age saga. It is classic, old school scifi and I really liked it.

I recommend the book.

4 out of 5 stars great title and fun story   April 14, 2010

This light fantasy is a quick read and I enjoyed it. One wouldn't expect this "mother" to be loved but she is. get it!

1 out of 5 stars Can't Finish It   March 9, 2010

I could not finish this book. Usually I can finish a good book in 2 to 3 days. This book, took me about a week and a half to get 60 percent of the way through it and decide that I couldn't read any more.

This was the first book I have read by this author but I will not read any more. I have to admit I am not that big a fan of the genre. I am not too picky for the books I buy, I usually buy the free kindle books even if they don't have a very good rating. This book has a good rating but I just can't see it.

If you are like this genre then by all means go for it and read it, however I did not like this book one tiny bit.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful imagery and detail   February 7, 2010
Debbie M. (New Hope, PA United States)
This series is definitely not for someone who's looking for non-stop action and constant conflict, but my 13-year old son and I have progressed to listening to the 9th book in this series and continue to enjoy the depth of character development and the rich descriptions of alien worlds. Some sections ARE long and somewhat tedious, as other reviewers have pointed out, but it gives readers/listeners a chance to visualize and imagine being in these strange places, something rare in today's multi-tasking and millisecond attention span world (true for adults, too!). The use of advanced vocabulary is also a big plus (from a mom's perspective) although I do have to complain about the use of "irregardless," which is NOT a word.

Nice book. I downloaded it to my Kindle for free. I won't buy another in the series.
